LemurTalk is an IRC server. IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is an ancient protocol for chatting. Think 90s AOL chatrooms. If you don't want to install/configure anything, just click on Connect Now button to use the web client. Though the server is up 24/7, we get together online at specific dates & times - ask Mr. Lemur for the weekly schedule.

If you are using an IRC Client, use these to connect:

Host / Server irc.lemurtalk.com Port 6697 (TLS) or 6667 (Plaintext) Using TLS is recommended. Only use Plaintext if your client does not support it or if your ISP is blocking the port.

IRC Cheatsheet / Crash Course

Here are some of the most commond IRC commands you can use. Type them with a slash at the beginning for the system to accept them as commands. You can find more commands on this page if you are interested.

Registering Nicknames

Nicknames are "usernames" - you don't need to register to chat, though you might want to register your nickname so people can't pretend to be you.

To register, type:

/ns register

password

e-mail

Example:

/ns register

secret1234

lmr@gmail.com

Logging In

Once you register your nick, if someone (including you) tries to login using that nick, they will be asked to identify themselves. If you/they don't, their nick will be changed.

To login, type:

/nsi

password

Example:

/nsi

secret1234

Channels

You can create channels - just "join" a non-existing channel and it will be created. User-created channels disappear once everyone leaves.

To join/create channel, type:

/join

channel name

Example:

/join

#thevoid

Don't forget to prefix the channel name with a hashtag.

Away Messages

If you'll be away from the keyboard for a bit, you can set an away message.

To set away message, type:

/away

your message

Example:

/away

petting the cat

To remove away message:

/away

Type the command without a message to remove away status.

DMs

Use the weirdly named 'query' command to send private messages to users.

To send a DM, type:

/query

username

message

Example:

/query

bigdickdaddy420

u up

Invites

You can invite users to your channels

To invite, type:

/invite

username

Example:

/invite

thecat

Topic

If you've created/own the channel, you can set the topic.

To set topic, type:

/topic

your message

Example:

/topic

why is the cat meowing??

Removing restriction

By default, only the channel creator can set the topic. If you are the channel creator and you want anyone to be able to set the topic, type:

/mode

channel

-t

Example:

/mode

#thevoid

-t

Replace "-t" with "+t" to add the restriction back.

Don't forget to prefix the channel name with a hashtag.

Password-protect channels

You can add a password to the channels you've created/own.

To set password, type:

/mode

channel

+k

password

Example:

/mode

#thevoid

+k

password1234

To remove password, type:

/mode

channel

-k

Don't forget to prefix the channel name with a hashtag.

Invite-only channels

You can also set a channel to be invite-only.

To set password, type:

/mode

channel

+i

Example:

/mode

#thevoid

+i

To remove restriction, type:

/mode

channel

-i

Don't forget to prefix the channel name with a hashtag.
